Ponckle The Cat Painter of St Ives is both an art monograph depicting the work of Ponckle over the fifty years of her artistic career, from her portraits of matadors in driftwood made on Mallorca in the 1960s to her iconic series of cat paintings produced during her prolific St Ives period in the late 20th century, as well as a collection of Pocnkle’s memoirs.
During the last years of her life, Ponckle meticulously recorded her exotic life in great detail, from hitch-hiking around France penniless in the 1950s, to styling Eartha Kitt in Paris in the Katherine Dunham Company, fleeing her first husband in a sports car across France and eventually settling on the Balearic island of Mallorca to devote herself to her painting career, before another exodus to St Ives in Cornwall, where Ponckle lived out her final years and produced her most memorable work. The book also contains sumptuous photographs of Ponckle’s eccentric dwelling at the end of Back Road East.
Ponckle The Cat Painter of St Ives is a beautiful testament to a remarkable artist as well as a colourful evocation of an artistic take on the 1950s, 60s and 70s in Europe.
